Train Ticket Concession Rules

Indian railway allowed train ticket fare concession to certain category of person/passengers willing to book accommodation (Seat / Berth). The concession in ticket fare allowed on certain conditions laid by Indian Railways and Rules made thereof.

Concessions are calculated on basis of fares of Mail and express trains even the passenger is travelling with any other train. Generally concession to persons not allowed on reservation charges and they also can not avail two concession at a time. Concession amount should be admissible in Indian railways to senior citizens, and to others on only production of certificate from concerned authorities such as medical practitioner etc.

Senior citizens need not to provide any document at time of buying ticket from Indian Railway ticket counters or through IRCTC or from any other online travel websites. However, senior citizen traveling in train will require to show one of the acceptable Identity proof / documentary evidence on demand of ticket checker or other railway authorities.

Train ticket fare Concession will be granted on all railway reservation counters and booking offices trough out India. Passengers can download concession forms available on official website of Indian Railway to fill and submit to concerned authority for claiming concession in train fare.

Percentage of concession differ from one category to other category of person for rail ticket fare. Every Class of travel is not allowed to everyone on concessional ticket. Awardees also allowed to travel in Rajdhani/ Shatabdi trains and Jan Shatabdi trains on concession ticket after age of sixty having presidents Police medal or Indian police award for meritorious services.

Disabled passengers

Concession to train ticket fare for Disabled passengers in Indian Railway is allowed to eligible candidates from 50% to 75%.

Person considered as disable to claim concession benefit :


Patient seeking concession in accommodation booking of Indian Railways are categorized under 15 categories. Only person falling under these categories are allowed to get train ticket concession on patient concession rules.

The patients those are eligible for ticket fare concession are as follows:

Senior Citizens

Both Men and women are allowed to get Senior citizen concession in rail ticket fare. Age for Men to avail Senior citizen concession is 60 years or above. Age of Women to get concession is 58 years or above. Senior citizens are allowed to travel on senior citizen concessional ticket purchased from Indian railways. Even concession for senior citizens is applicable in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains.


Person who have been awarded special awards can travel on concessional ticket in Indian Rail. Recipient of presidents police medal, Indian Police Award holder, Shram Awardees, National Awardees teachers and either of parents travelling with the child who is recipient of national Bravery award are eligible to claim concession on train ticket fare for travelling with Indian Railways.

War Widows

War widows, widows of policemen and paramilitary personnel, widows of I.P.K.F. personnel, widows of defense personnel and widows of Martyrs of Operation Vijay in Kargil are eligible to get concession on rail ticket fare. 75% concession on fare is permissible for widows travelling in 2nd and Sleeper class. To avail the war widows concession, eligible widow need not to mention the purpose of traveling. Concession is allowed to travel for any purpose.


Students falling under various categories are allowed to avail train fare concession during their travel. The concession is available to Students going to home town and on educational tours, Students of Government schools in Rural area, Girls ticket fare concession for entrance exams of engineering, medical etc, Concession to students appearing in UPSC and SSC main examination, Foreign Students studying in India, research scholars up to age of 35 years, students and other participating in work camps, cadets and Marine engineers apprentice are allowed concession in train ticket for second and sleeper class.


Unemployed youths, bharat scout and guide youths and youths attending national integration camps of national youth project and Manav Uththan Sewa Samiti are allowed concession in train ticket fare. These youths can travel on concessional ticket purchase for travelling with Indian Railways.


Indian Railway also make provision of concession to Kissans and Industrial laborers who are willing to travel via train. The train ticket fare concession allowed to Kissans and Industrial laborers, Milk Producer, and delegates of Bharat Krishak Samaj, Sarvodaya Samaj, Wardha. Percentage of concession on fare amount is vary from 25% to 50%.

Artists and Sportspersons

Artist, film technician, sportsmen participating in all India and state tournaments, national tournaments, press correspondent are allowed to get benefit of train fare amount concession. These eligible person will get concession according to their category.

Medical Professionals

All allopathic doctors, Nurses and midwives can avail train ticket fare concession while travelling in train. Doctors will get concession of 10% in all classes while travelling for any purpose and Nurse and midwife will get 25% concession in 2nd and sleeper class while travelling for leave and duty.

Concession to Others

Delegates for attending Annual conference, Bharat Seva Dal Bangalore, teachers of primary, secondary and higher secondary schools for educational tours and others are allowed to avail concession on train ticket fare.

Izzat MST

Izzat MST holders will be allowed concession of Rs. 25 while travelling on trains. Izzat MST issued to persons with monthly income less than Rs. 1500 and who are working in unorganized sector.
